Tehila Sasson will discuss her new book, The Solidarity Economy: Nonprofits and the Making of Neoliberalism after Empire (Princeton University Press, 2024), describing the role of British NGOs in reshaping economic relations between consumers and "Third World" producers. Drawing on dozens of newly available archives, Sasson will reconstruct the political economy of post-imperial markets in products ranging from handicrafts and sugar to tea and coffee, shedding critical light on the origins of neoliberalism.
